Today’s society has changed almost beyond recognition compared to 15-20 years ago. Although many new facets have created opportunities for our children, conversely some have eroded basic values. The following have all contributed to demise in our children’s understanding of a normal healthy lifestyle: -

  1. 24 hour TV, computers and electronic games.

  2. A significant decrease in `safe` areas for children to play.

  3. A fear of `stranger danger` if children play away from the home enclave.

  4. In many families both parents work, making quality time with children difficult to find.

  5. Dietary considerations have given way to convenience foods.

Healthy play should be part of everyday life for young children.  It is essential to 3 keys areas of a balanced child: -

  1. 1.Physical development of the body.

  2. 2.Psychological development of the mind.

  3. 3.Understanding relationships and responsibility within the family & community .

Children used to spend most of their play time outside the home with similar aged children as friends. Today much of this time is spent indoors or in the confines of a garden, with a decline in communal play and the values inherent therein.

The probable results of neglecting the needs of children to enjoy a healthy lifestyle in the 3 key areas are: -

  1. A continuing rise in obesity amongst children with related problems such as type 2 diabetes

  2. A decline in ability to communicate normally and understand our role in the community. (this is already evident  in some teenagers)

  3. A decline in a child’s ability to integrate naturally into society. In some cases a growing sense of isolation may lead to increasing frustration and difficulty adapting to societies natural laws.
